Umoja (Day 1 of the Kwanzaa Celebration)
Kwanzaa is made up holiday that started in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga soon after the Watts Riots, it is simply a holiday celebration that embraces the history and priciples of blacks in the African Diaspora. It is a non religious holiday that aims to strengthen the bonds amongst all people.
Umoja begins the celebration with the theme of Unity or of Togetherness.
It is important for those, not only African Americans but for all people to demonstrate this "Umoja" in this 43rd celebration of Kwanzaa, especially given the economic climate we find ourselves in today.
